These cards follow the overriding principal of the Matrix Writing framework. They are equally effective to use for reading comprehension as they are for planning and organizing ideas for writing a story. They even provide a bridging learning experience between comprehension and writing.

 

Begin by having students fill out these cards for the stories they read or hear. Once the students are consistently able to fill out these cards correctly, they can use these same cards to plan the characters, setting, and conflict for their own stories!

 

Here is how to use these cards as a bridge between reading comprehension and organizing ideas for writing. After students have completed multiple cards for each element, (character, setting, and conflict) have them keep the various cards. Before expecting them to fill in the blank cards to organize the elements of the stories they write, have them try this. Have the student randomly select a card for each element to inspire an idea for a story. For example, a student may select the following cards:

 

The Cat in the Hat (the element of character from the book "The Cat in the Hat").

 

Narnia (the element of stetting from the book "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe").

 

Save the life of a pig (the element of conflict from the book "Charlotte's Web").

 

In this case, the student would have to write a story about the Cat in the Hat going to Narnia to save a pig's life. This is not only a great story starter activity, but it makes sure students get practice including all of the elements of story in their own writing!

 

This document provides a level three scaffolding. This means it provides significant structural support for the learner. This has no bearing on grade level use. It simply means that it sturcture is a little more detailed.
